Korean Actress Kim Bu-seon Speaks out for Marijuana

I have to admire the courage of actress Kim Bu-Seon who she spoke out on MBC yesterday advocating the legalisation of marijuana.

She has subsquently come under fire from a fairly ignorant and indoctrinated public whom are calling on MBC to issue an apology for airing the interview.

So much for free speech and freedom of the press.

``Have you ever heard of any news that I committed a crime after smoking marijuana? I have never done anything harmful, as politicians or thieves have," she said.

The actress also claimed that marijuana use can be beneficial to people with certain medical conditions.

``If smoking it doesn't do harm to others, those who do need it, such as those suffering from depression or cancer patients, should be allowed to use it. Marijuana increases appetite and improves sleep," she continued.

``Korea has the highest ratio of death by suicide among OECD members. The nation needs to take marijuana as a depression remedy and make depression patients come back to society."

She also claimed that investigations into entertainers who smoke cannabis were politically motivated.

``Whenever the government has troubles, it uses drug-taking entertainers to divert people's attention. It is the best way to make entertainers and artists obey the government,'' Kim said.

By dragging in the government I beleive she may have lost the opportunity to gather some momentum. That battle is probably best fought another day. It comes off looking more like a bitter rant than an expressed need for a minor social/legal correction.

Anyway, good on her for speaking out. Granted she probably doesn't have much to lose in the way of her career since she is a bit of has been. In fact she probably hopes ot benefit from the publicity. But the tunnel vision of Korean on all drugs is disturbing. Soju has to be one the more socially disturbing and problematic drug at great expense to society.

Bangkok Commute!

This is my daily commute in Bangkok. 100,000's of Bangkokians use motorcycle taxis get to and from work everyday. Most of the time "motosai" trips and short bursts of necessity to head down a soi to connect with a major transport network whether it be BTS, MRT or even a taxi. But for a great many the "motosai's are the fastest way to get from oneside of the city to other magically weaving through the "rot dtitt" (traffic jam). I took a few clips. In this clip the motosai pushes along Rama IV. Having turned down Thanon Witthayu (Wireless Road) the motosai driver begins to push through the traffic and does a nice job of getting to front of the intersection. Just before the light goes green all the motosai's will scream out in a frantic race to the next red light.

In this next clip you can see very clearly at 27 sec a big white apartment building. That's my building.

To be fair, I like a little more oxygen in my lead laced carbonmonoxide fix. So I usually take the skytrain. These clips were taken as I rushed to get home for a football match.

Song of the day - Lagwagon - Know it All

This is great track from post punk Lagwagon circa 1994. The band epitmised the Fat Wreck Chords SoCal sound of the time period. Enough said...I'm going to let the track and lyrics speak for themselves!

Look at the world in disbelief
You used to follow - now you lead
College has enlightened you
And you are proud to be different
And like different bands - different types
You ain't nobody's fool
It's like certain bands remind you of someone you hated
'Cause they didn't wear the right clothing
And there's only one true fashion
A lot of the bands on the college charts are great bands
Until they get signed. Then you hate them
It's such bullshit - you used to love them you hypocrite

Know it all, know it all
Did you really listen to that song?
Could you ever write what you call wrong?

I remember you and I listening to bands that we liked
Only the songs mattered to you
But now you're a D.J. and preaching that hype
"Corporate Rock Sucks"
"You know, college radio enlightens you"
It's supposed to serve as a means to expose new bands
Without prejudice, but it makes no sense
Safe harbor for the underground
'Til the alternative becomes the popular sound
The bands are good 'til they make enough cash
To eat food and get a pad
Then they're sold out and their music is cliché
Because talent's exclusive to bands without pay

Know it all, know it all
Did you really listen to that song?
Could you ever write what you call wrong?
Know it all

Swedish Garage Punk and Burning Heart Records

For 16 years now Burning Heart records from tiny Orebro in Sweden have been releasing the best of the Swedish Garage Punk flavour.

My initiation was both Millencolin and No Fun At All (NFAA)in the mid-late 90's. These bands really did it for my mates and I at the time. A few years later as my interest waned The (International) Noise Conspiracy and The Hives get the Burning Heart label on my radar. Most of these bands have their biggest following outside of Sweden in Australia.

NFAA Rock. Here's 'Should Have Known' a post punk track that just builds and builds. Just before they broke up in one of their last gigs I got kicked out of their concert in 2000 for crowd surfing. I was reporting for Rave magazine at the time. I managed to get back in tho. "Oi dipshit...if you like working here then you'll lgo get your boss!"

Check out 2:12 until 2:52...fuckin awesome!

Millencolin are essentialyl Burning Heart records and this band is easily one of my top 10 important bands of all time. Here's a track called 'Leona'. Millencolin call themselves softcore and did well to stay away form that "emo" tag. Their songs struck a chord with my friends during our Uni days.

One more... Dance Craze ..yeah.. check 1.08 until 1.40!

The (International) Noise Conspiracy have awesome politics. They've picked up where RATM left off. Maybe I'll do a post about political music later. Here's "Smash it Up".

I only got into one of their records but this is a great Hives track.. Hate to say I told you so.

No More Wads of 10,000 Won Notes..앗싸!

If you're a bit of a high roller like myself, then you've been agitated time and again trying to squeeze your wallet full of 10,000 won notes into your jeans.

Well, it seems the 50,000 won note will finally soon be with us. Just in time for my return to Korea! Yep, when I arrive back in Korea in 10 days I'll go to the ATM and get a nice crisp mini wad of 50,000 won notes and slip them into my wallet and the easily slip my wallet into my pants like a ummm...ahh a wallet with 10 50,000 notes instead of 50 10,000' notes..yeah.

With the bill’s release, “the retail industry is expecting an overall change in consumer spending and purchasing patterns, which will bring an increase in department store sales,” says Lee Jae-jin from Shinsegae.

Circulation of the new 50,000 won bill, due June 23, is likely to revive consumer spending, an official at the Federation of Korean Distribution predicted.

I like the logic in this. Since less notes are leaving the wallet people can spend more? Hooray!

I can also forego the dubious look vendors give when getting 100,000 or 1,000,000 won bank check from a 외국인.

I've Been Chosen as an Extra in the Movie Adaptation of the Sequel to My Life

Yep, Pavement.

It's hard to talk about this band. I mean, I slowly bought their whole catalogue on CD between the ages of 18-21. They have an interesting low-fi sound and would generally end up being labelled indierock or shoe gazing.

But they are more complex than that. Interestingly enough I used to listen to this band alone most of the time. I just found their sound very non-assuming in an almost comforting kind of way. Sometimes their records were pretty far out there in an almost prog rock way. Some of it was gold.... some of it wasn't.

This track is called "Cut Your Hair" from their 2nd LP Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain.

1.35 until 2.30 is awesome!

But Lollapalooza didn't like them!

Check out Steve flipping the bird and mooning the crowd... hilarious but a shame for Pavement fans.

The Two Korea's Qualify for the 2010 World Cup

Well, I can barely believe it.

North Korea scraped through by the skin of the highly enriched uranium by drawing with Saudi Arabia 0-0 in Riyadh on Wednesday night to finish second in its Asian 3rd-round qulifying group.

North Korea qualified for its first World Cup since 1966 on the back of Park Ji Sung's fantastic goal against Iran in Seoul last night which helped the Red Devils to a 1-1 draw. After Park Chu-Young missed a guilt edged chance that he'd brilliantly set up for himself and hit the post from a screaming free-kick it looked like it was going to be one of those nights for the Koreans.

That was until Park played through a beautiful give and go find himself tearing into the box before perfectly placing an unstoppable shot at the near post.

(Check 3.30 and 4.30 for the aforementioned highlights)

Of course, Korea already had its ticket to South Africa 2010 booked. The two points Iran dropped meant that 1 point for the North Koreans was enough.

It was touch and go for the North in the tense but thrilling final 10 mins. They looked pretty wobbly and nervous at the back giving the Saudi's every opportunity to book their place in the Finals at the expense of North Korea. Kim Yong-jun was dismissed from the pitch deep in injury-time for a deliberate ankle tap secinds after Kim Kum Il missed a sitter hat would've settled the matter. The North managed to hang and went nuts at the final whistle qualifing for their first World Cup since 1966.

Though technically enemies and still at war, their victory was highy celebrated in the South and was a victory for the Korean minjok. Two countries, one blood! I'm sure it be long until we hear about how a united Korean team could win the World Cup!

Check out Saudi missed chances at 2:30, 3:02 and 3:35 and a golden North Korean opportunity at 3:21. Highly entertaining for scoreless draw. But really teh Saudi's should've punished North Korea and booked their World Cup tik sending the North out of the tournament.

Song of the Day - Cast - Finetime

This a great Britpop song from 94 or 95. Cast was formed by former The La's bassist John Power. This is a great song but unfortunately they didn't do too much else. John Power plays lead and sings for Cast.

The La's helped pioneer the britpop sound and were quite a hyped band as well. Unfortunately they faced a myriad of problems and didn't do much else after recording only the one album. I'll throw in There She Goes too, for good measure.

Hope you've enjoyed a bit of a Britpop dose. Let me know what you think!

Another Crack!

Well, I decided to give this blog a real go. It is kind of shameful that I've been reading the blogs of others and commenting for 4-5 years without having a real crack at it myself.

So here goes. This will be a personal blog the will take on me, my life, things I enjoy, things I don't enjoy and matters topical to my life.

I'll make sure the next post has a topic!

Thursday 10 January 2008

It has begun...

This is the first of what will hopefully be many posts in this blog based on all things relevant to my life...
